SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA - World Trade Center Utah has participated in a humanitarian project in Peru, in partnership with CAP Logistics. Three 40-ft containers of winter coats were delivered on May 13 to the residents of Piura region (Peru). This operation is an integral part of the collaborative economic development effort of the WTC Utah and the Regional Administration of Piura that started in 2009, when the first delegation from Piura, led by the Governor, visited state of Utah and signed Agreement of Collaboration.
The Piura region is one of the largest regions located in northwestern Peru. It has a considerable coastline with opportunities for world-class surfing; however, its economic development stems from more traditional sectors inland like mining, agriculture and education. Elizabeth Goryunova, Interim President & CEO of the World Trade Center Utah, visited the region in August 2013 on invitation from the Piura Regional Governor Javier Atkins. At that time, the Mayors of the Municipality of Castilla and Piura warmly welcomed Ms. Goryunova and gave an overview of the most critical projects (in water purification, alternative energy and humanitarian sectors) that could yield opportunities for Utah companies to share their expertise and products.
On behalf of the World Trade Center Utah Ms. Goryunova signed partnership agreements with the Municipality of Castilla, Piura as well as the chambers of commerce of Piura and Sechura. As a result of that visit, the World Trade Center Utah has been facilitating access of the leaders of Piura to Utah experts in energy, water and education. In the meantime, an opportunity came along to assist residents of Piura with winter clothing. It took about 3 months to sail across the ocean as well as through complex customs regulations, but WTC Utah is delighted with the success of operation and looking forward to more engagement with Piura.
