Okinawa Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It comprises hundreds of islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long. United States has a number of bases on Okinawa which are financially supported by the U.S. and Japan. In 2011, the U.S. military employed over 9800 Japanese workers in Okinawa, contributing $1.9 billion to the local economy. Okinawa is also a major producer of sugar cane, pineapple, papaya, and other tropical fruit.
